Often it happens that we want to remotely access files from our home computer when we are at a meeting or we want to remotely shut down our PC. At such times, Microsoft’s Remote Desktop feature comes into play. Here’s how you can enable and use it in Windows 7.

Settings you must configure on your home computer so that it can be accessed remotely

1. Open System Information Window by pressing Windows + Pause Break. Click and open Remote Settings from the top left menu.

2. Check the “Allow Remote Assistance Connection to this Computer” Option.

3. Select “Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop (less secure)”. As it says, it is the not the most secure option because any one who knows your Network IP and Login Credentials can access your computer without any problem. If you want more secure option than continue with the third option “Allow connections only from computers running any version of Remote Desktop with Network Level Authentication (more secure)

Settings you must configure on your remote computer through which you are accessing your home computer

1. Open Command Prompt by typing cmd in the Start Menu search box. Type in mstsc in the command window and press Enter.

CMD

2. Remote Desktop Connection Window will pop up. Enter the Computer IP Address (your home computer in this case). For more advanced option click the Options button. Enter the user name of the home computer and press connect.
