A big disadvantage with the Apple iPhone is that you can only use ringtones that are downloaded from Apple iTunes Store. But here is a simple hack that will let you create and use custom ringtones on your iPhone.
This hack only works with DRM free MP3, AIFF and ACC files. For making a custom ringtone you have to have iTunes 8 installed on your system. Just follow the video tutorial.
1. Fire up iTunes.
2. Select a song from your library that you want to be converted into a ringtone. Right click on the selected song and click Get Info.
3. Click on the Options tab and select Start Time and Stop Time. These two fields represents the total duration of your ringtone. A duration of 30-40 sec is good enough for a ringtone. Edit the Stop Time text box and enter 0.30.00 or whatever duration you like.
4. Press OK. With the song still selected, click the Advanced Tab in the Menu and select Create AAC Version or Create Apple Lossless Version. This will create a duplicate track with a shortened duration. Make sure that your iTunes Import Settings are set to AAC or Apple Lossless and not MP3.
5. Drag and Drop that duplicate file to the Desktop and change its extension from .m4a to .m4r. Delete the duplicate copy from iTunes.
6. Drag the renamed .m4r file back into iTunes by dragging the file over the Library column and release when Library becomes highlighted.
7. That’s it your new ringtone is now created and ready to be synced!
